Outreach Development Manager (Fixed Term - 1 year Maternity Cover)

An opportunity is available for an Outreach Development Manager to cover a maternity leave. The right candidate will continue to deliver the existing sessions offered for young people from Widening Participation backgrounds, whether as part of their school experiences or attending individually during school holidays. 

The post holder will have an excellent track record of inspirational teaching and devising sessions, and there is scope to develop new workshops and programmes; for example as part of our Junior and Teen Vet Club days, as well as our popular public engagement events ‘Night at the Vet College’. In addition, the post holder will be expected to contribute to the sustainability of programmes through identifying sources of funding for public engagement.

Communication with a wide range of stakeholders is vital to the success if this role. The candidate will be responsible for line managing two members of staff, and will be expected to have an informed voice in the long term strategy of the Widening Participation Team through engaging with our Theory of Change, and bringing in knowledge of schools and teaching to inform future directions.

Externally, they will be expected to confidently liaise with pupils, teachers and parents for effective delivery of the Easter and Summer schools, workshops and Teen Vet Club for secondary pupils, and the Junior Vet Club and Homework club for primary pupils. This will involve recruiting, managing and training student ambassadors, and advising about Child Protection including DBS check management.

The Office for Students will be monitoring all universities’ progress towards equality for under-represented groups, and the candidate will be involved in working with targets and data to report on this. Periodically, reviews of public engagement activity will be required for external reporting and government statistics.

This post will suit a creative and energetic individual who values social mobility and is interested in facilitating new opportunities for disadvantaged young people to pursue science careers.
