The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is looking to appoint as Head of Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation a team member with specialist knowledge and expertise in intellectual property management in the university sector. This role will offer the opportunity to lead on a range of activities under the umbrella of RVC's knowledge exchange (KE) strategy, including the development of a stronger ecosystem to ensure the translation of intellectual property into new therapies, products and services for improving animal health and human health. 

The post-holder will report to the Director of the Research Support Office, and be expected to liaise closely with other senior staff, notably the Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation), the Head of Research Development and the Head of Research Contracts and Due Diligence. The appointee will lead RVC’s technology transfer activities, growing the intellectual property portfolio and developing strategic partnerships with relevant businesses and other stakeholders. They will provide dedicated support to academics by managing IP negotiations; preparing technology transfer agreements and commercial licences; and identifying new opportunities for commercial service provision and spin-out company formation.

For successful delivery of these tasks, the post-holder will need the confidence to lead discussions with external stakeholders including patent attorneys and IP advisers. They will apply a collaborative and collegiate approach to delivery of these tasks, working with colleagues in the Research Support Office, RVC Business and other Professional Services departments, as well as academic staff and researchers to ensure the strategic management and exploitation of the College’s intellectual property portfolio.

This varied and interesting role will also be responsible for:  
• management of the College’s grant allocation from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (£2.1 million p.a. in 2020-21);
• providing support for submissions to the Knowledge Exchange Framework and Knowledge Exchange Concordat;
• drafting or assisting with applications for externally-funded translational projects;
• providing practice-based insight and training, and identifying opportunities to promote the commercialisation of the College’s research;
• offering support for the College’s submission to the Research Excellence Framework beyond 2021, notably the development of Impact Case Studies.

Candidates must have experience in knowledge exchange in a university environment and a good understanding of best practice in partnership development. The post-holder will be expected to maintain their professional skills and understanding of new developments in KE and commercialisation through proactive involvement in networks, professional bodies and working groups, and will have opportunity to implement the knowledge thus gained by further developing the RVC’s commercialisation strategy and activities.
