Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly reported in veterinary practice and is linked to inappropriate use of antimicrobial (AM). It is therefore essential that veterinarians use the right type of AM, the correct dose, at the right time – a concept known as AM stewardship. Working with VetCompass, this Petplan Charitable Trust funded project aims to implement and evaluate key antimicrobial stewardship interventions to improve antimicrobial drug usage and help preserve key therapeutics for the benefit of small animal health and welfare.

The successful candidate will coordinate the AM stewardship project working closely with the project supervisors and practice collaborators. AM stewardship protocols will be developed and refined and changes in AM usage evaluated.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to lead this ground breaking project.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a postgraduate qualification (MSc or Phd) and research experience
  • Demonstrate experience of epidemiology and statistical analysis, with some experience of working with large databases.
  • Have good communication skills and be willing to contact and communicate with participating practices and other stakeholders
  • Have good scientific writing skills.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work collaboratively in a team.

The following are also desirable:

  • PhD in epidemiology or related subject
  • Experience of veterinary practice
  • Experience of designing, conducting, analyzing and reporting an original research project.
  • Experience of qualitative research methods
  • Knowledge of antimicrobial usage and stewardship
  • Evidence of scientific publication and conference presentation.

This project will be full time for 2 years commencing in April 2021, and will be based at RVC's Hawkshead campus. In the case of continuing to Covid 19 restrictions, it will be possible to start this Postdoc by working remotely.
